Although birth rates continue to decline in China, the census in the most populous country in the world recorded a new increase in 2019.

The National Statistical Office said that the population of mainland China reached 1.4005 billion people by the end of 2019, with a total increase of 4.67 million.

This was the third consecutive year that there was a decline in the total number of births.

The number of Chinese people of working age declined between 16 and 59 years by about 890,000, compared to 896.4 million in 2018, while the number of people over 60 increased by 4.39 million, to represent that segment about 18.1 percent of the total population

China abandoned its one-child policy in 2016, hoping to overcome what some have called a "demographic tsunami" in which China is aging before it can achieve its development goals.

However, the policy that allows urban children to have a second child has not been very successful, due to the lack of incentives and the high costs of housing, food, health care, and education.
