East Coast of Australia
Heavy thunderstorms, accompanied by heavy rains, invaded areas where forest fires are burning on the east coast of Australia on Friday, easing the burden on exhausted firefighters
And farmers who have been suffering from drought for years
Australia has been fighting forest fires since September, killing 29 people and killing millions of animals, as well as destroying more than 2,500 homes and affecting an area equivalent to nearly a third of Germany’s area.
The states worst affected by drought and forest fires, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, received heavy rain with relief this week, as firefighting departments said the rains would not put out fires but would contribute significantly to containing them.
"We hope it (the rain) will continue in the coming days," the New South Wales Fire Department wrote to Twitter on Friday.
The meteorological office in New South Wales said that severe storms are expected to continue in many areas ravaged by fires in New South Wales and Queensland, including areas that did not witness heavy rains in years, which would slightly alleviate the drought that affected the state three years ago.
