A strong storm, Gloria, blew across parts of Spain on Sunday, accompanied by strong winds, heavy rain and snow, forcing the authorities to close Alicante airport, while a man was killed in an accident in the northern province of Asturias.
The Spanish meteorological agency (Immit) said that the storm is expected to intensify overnight and continue until at least Tuesday, and that its force will be more severe in the Balearic and Balearic Islands.
The meteorological department announced the highest alert in ten provinces, awaiting winds of up to 130 km per hour, waves reaching seven meters, and heavy snowfall.
Aena, the operator of the airport in Alicante, said it was forced to close the airport for 24 hours, starting at 1200 GMT, affecting approximately 200 flights.
Gloria also caused snow storms in the north of the country. A spokeswoman for emergency services said a man in Asturias had died after a vehicle hit him on a snow-covered road.
The Barcelona authorities called on the population to stay away from the beaches to avoid being swept away by the waves, and public parks around the capital Madrid were closed.
