Canada's Ontario authorities announced today, Sunday, that a "accident" had occurred at a nuclear plant in the southeastern province, but the warning was later found to be wrong.
The county administration said, in an emergency alert issued Sunday that it sent to local residents via SMS, that the accident occurred at Pickering Station near Toronto, but stressed that no abnormal amounts of radiation had been leaked.
The local authorities explained that "elements of the emergency teams are dealing with an accident" at the station, while adding that there is no need to take additional measures to protect the local population.
But the Ontario Nuclear Energy Authority later stated that the warning was sent in error, stressing that there is no threat to residents in the area.
